EMOP 2016 – European Month of Photography Berlin 1.-31.10.2016
The European Month of Photography Berlin started last Saturday and is the greatest German photography festival.
It first took place in 2004 and since the it returns every 2 years. There will be numerous historic and contemporary exhibitions presented during the festival month, as well as accompanying events. 2 years ago the operator Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH celebrated the 10th anniversary of the EMOP festival with a great success also due to its growing cooperation with museums, galleries, cultural institutions, embassies, photography schools and project teams from Berlin and Potsdam. The last edition of the festival reached 2 million visitors, presented 500 exhibitions with 30.000 fotos and 2000 attending photographers.
Besides Berlin, the festival takes place in 6 more European cities: Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxemburg, Paris and Vienna. Now the festival starts over in Berlin and we can surely expect a whole new collection of exciting works.
The EMOP kicked off on 29.9.16 in the C/O Berlin / America Haus. The festival will offer a wide range of topics, which gives every visitor the chance to find an area of interest. Exhibitions will take place in all districts of Berlin you can find further information regarding the locations on the EMOP website: http://www.emop-berlin.eu/en/exhibitions/locations/
You will find some with an entrance fee, but most of them will offer a free entrance. Besides the exhibitions, there will be award ceremonies, open photo labs, guided tours, workshops, as well as films, presentations, talks and even a EMOP bus tour.
Workshops will be especially interesting for photographers searching for a new challenge, ranging from glass plate photography to classical architectural photography to fashion photography. There will also be a family workshop to the exhibition “Lucia Moholy – The English Yeears” where participants from 5 years can actively take part during this workshop.
Additional highlights and topics of EMOP Berlin are taking place at Berlinische Galerie, Institut français, Martin-Gropius-Bau and Willy-Bandt-Haus. The Berlinische Galerie is known to be one of the best galleries in Berlin as it has one of the most important photography collections in Germany. It shows a selection that ranges from Zille to proponents of the German “author photography” movement during the 1970s.
But not just German based art is presented. Also institutions like embassies present their countrie’s artists (e.g. Mexican or Brazilian embassies). So Berlin will use all its cultural and architectural charm to present the artworks in the best way.
