A Brief History of Pariser Platz

From Aristocratic Beginnings to a Symbol of Unity

Pariser Platz was established between 1732 and 1734 and initially featured stately palaces of the aristocracy. It was named in 1814 to commemorate the Prussian troops' victory over Napoleon in Paris.

During the 18th century, the Brandenburg Gate served as the main entrance to the city, located at the western edge of the customs wall. Over time, Pariser Platz became a ceremonial space, hosting triumphant military parades across various regimes, from the Hohenzollerns to the German Democratic Republic.

War, Division, and Rebirth

The Second World War left the square in ruins, with the Brandenburg Gate as the only structure still standing amidst the rubble. Pariser Platz later became part of the Berlin Wall's “death strip,” symbolizing division. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the square was meticulously restored, featuring the reopening of Hotel Adlon and the creation of a vibrant public space that complements the majesty of the Brandenburg Gate.
