A Brief History of Madame Tussauds

The history of Madame Tussauds dates back to 1770. Marie Tussauds learned the art of wax modeling from her uncle, Dr. Philippe Curtis. At just 17 years old, she became the private tutor of a sister of King Louis XVI at the Palace of Versailles. During the French Revolution, she created numerous wax models of victims for the Museum of the Revolution. At the time, the heads of the executed were displayed but decayed quickly. Wax heads, cast from death masks, replaced them.

In 1794, Marie’s uncle passed away, and she inherited his collection of wax figures. She supplemented the collection with her creations and toured Great Britain and Ireland for several years. In 1802, she exhibited her collection for the first time in London. In 1835, she founded "The Baker Bazaar," her exhibition museum, with her sons on Baker Street. Marie ran the wax museum until 1842. Her grandson, Joseph Randall, moved the exhibition to its current location on Marylebone Road in 1884.

The exhibition began to transform in the 20th century as media made events and information more accessible. Unfortunately, the museum faced challenges, including a major fire in 1925, an earthquake in 1931, and bombings during World War II.

After reconstruction, Madame Tussauds became a vital tourist attraction in London. Today, it is a key destination in cities worldwide, including Berlin. On July 5, 2008, Madame Tussauds opened at its historic location on Unter den Linden, just a few meters from the Brandenburg Gate.
