The Old National Gallery in Berlin

The Old National Gallery is considered one of the most important museum architectures of the 19th century.

As one of the largest German collections of 19th century art, the Alte Nationalgalerie presents masterpieces by Caspar David Friedrich, Adolph Menzel, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Auguste Rodin, among others. Stop for a while before you go to the Old National Gallery. Admire the imposing neoclassical building. The upper part is framed by columns in the style of an ancient temple. Highlights include Caspar David Friedrich's Der Mönch am Meer (1808-1810), Arnold Böcklin's Die Toteninsel (1883), Adolph Menzel's Flute Concerto Friedrich the Great in Sanssouci (1850-1852) or Edouard Manet's Im Wintergarten (1878/79).

Brief history of the Old National Gallery

The first impetus for the foundation of a National Gallery came in 1815, and the first real plans were drawn up in 1841. The banker Johann Heinrich Wagener donated 262 paintings by German and foreign artists. This donation formed the basis of the current collection. The collection was initially known as Wagenersche and Nationalgalerie and was housed in the Akademie der Künste buildings. Today's building, shaped like a Roman temple. It was badly damaged in Allied air raids. It was partially reopened in 1949, but reconstruction took until 1969.
