Shortly after the fall of the wall artists from around the world gathered to paint on a piece of the wall. Shortly after the fall of the wall artists from around the world gathered to paint on a piece of the wall.
The west side of the wall was already full of paintings before 1989.
The most famous paintings are “The Brotherkiss” by Dimitrji Vrubel showing Honecker and Breschnew giving each other the socialist brotherkiss in 1979 in Berlin, as well as a painting of an eastern German car, a Trabant smashing through the Wall.

As many paintings were pretty destroyed after the years, the whole gallery was restored in 2008, when a lot of the original artists returned to Berlin to restore their paintings. Now the gallery is once again resplendent. Located directly at the river Spree, you can lay relaxed on the lawn or enjoy a cocktail in one of the many beach bars.
Right in front of the East Side Gallery you find the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, where up to 17,000 spectators fit in to watch a concert or an Ice-hockey or Basketball match.
Also super close by you find Berlin´s most beautiful bridge, the Oberbaumbrücke, where during the summer nights musicians gather to keep the night awake.
Within walking distance you can reach the Alexanderplatz, which is another highlight of the city of Berlin.
