The Victory Column in Berlin

In the heart of the Tiergarten stands the Victory Column, a protected monument crowned by the goddess of victory, Victoria.

Victory Column Berlin: A Golden View of History.

The Victory Column in Berlin, affectionately known as the "Golden Elsa" ("Goldelse") by locals, is a prominent landmark commemorating Prussian victories in the wars of unification against Denmark (1864), Austria (1866), and France (1870/71). Originally erected on Königsplatz, it was relocated in 1938/39 to its current location at the Großer Stern and heightened to 67 meters. Topped with a golden statue of the goddess Victoria, the column offers a spectacular view of Berlin from its observation deck.

The column was inaugurated in 1873 as a national monument to celebrate the victories over Denmark, Austria, and France. However, it was moved from its original site to make way for Nazi urban planning. In 1938, it was relocated to the Tiergarten, where it now sits at a major traffic intersection known as the Großer Stern.

The golden statue of Victoria, lovingly nicknamed "Goldelse" by Berliners, is a striking feature of the monument. Visitors can access the central area via several pedestrian tunnels.

After climbing 285 steps to the top, you can enjoy the wind on your face and take in the breathtaking views of the Tiergarten, Potsdamer Platz, and the Brandenburg Gate. The Victory Column is one of Berlin's Top 10 attractions.
