The Funkturm is located in the western district of Charlottenburg. If you’re planning to visit the Berlin Trade Fair (Messe Berlin), a trip to the Funkturm is a must. You could also combine it with a visit to Charlottenburg Palace for a full cultural day.

A Short History of the Funkturm

Construction of the Funkturm began in 1924 for Berlin’s first major radio exhibition. Completed in 1926, it was inaugurated on September 3, 1926. Modeled after the Eiffel Tower, the Funkturm was designed by architect Heinrich Straumer and served as a landmark for the newly designed trade fairgrounds in Charlottenburg.

Many are unaware that the Funkturm once carried antennas for German radio broadcasting, which began in 1923. In 1932, it was equipped with the world’s first FM transmitter, and by 1936, it was broadcasting the first regular television programs. The tower is uniquely supported by porcelain insulators. It remained in use for radio and television transmission until 1963 when it was replaced by a modern television tower.
