Komische Oper Berlin with its Neo-Baroque Auditorium

The Komische Oper on the Behrenstraße in the district of Mitte, is among the German Opera and the State Opera the smallest of the three Berlin operas. However, the same cannot be said about its production quality. From the outside it seems rather inconspicuous, but from the inside, it looks as one imagines a classical opera.

From the outside, the Komische Oper may seem unassuming, but its interior is everything one imagines a classic opera house to be. A unique feature of the building is its simple façade and modern foyer, which contrast sharply with the Neo-Baroque auditorium.

On stage, less well-known pieces are often performed, or popular operas are given a modern twist. The scenic action is equally important as the music. Subtle displays at the audience seats provide translations in German, English, French, and Turkish. The Neo-Baroque auditorium and imaginative productions transport visitors into a one-of-a-kind operatic cosmos.

A Short History of the Komische Oper

The Komische Oper is Berlin's oldest concert hall. Designed in 1827 by master architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the former "Sing-Akademie" served as a concert hall for Berlin’s oldest mixed choir. After World War II, the classical building was reopened as a spoken theater. Since 1952, it has been known as the Maxim Gorki Theater, showcasing contemporary productions.

Under new leadership since 2013, the theater has focused particularly on social upheavals and transitional situations.
