The House of the World´s Cultures in Berlin

The name says it all. This is where the world meets. The form, somewhat unusual, is reminiscent of an oyster and is therefore affectionately called "pregnant oyster" by Berliners.

The House of Cultures creates a link between discourse, exhibitions, concerts and performances from research, mediation offers and publications.
Artistic productions from all over the world are presented at this location, a place of exchange and discussion. Every year in February at the Berlinale, children's films are shown in the main hall. For the culinary well-being the restaurant "Auster" provides in which you, beside seafood, also domestic meals, with an unusual view of the Spree, can enjoy.
Unfortunately, the Haus der Kulturen has no parking spaces of its own. The best thing is, you come by public transport or bicycle and if you feel like a boat trip, no problem, the House of Cultures has its own mooring for boat trips.

Brief history of the World´s Cultures in Berlin

The building was an American contribution to the Berlin International Building Exhibition in 1957 and was formerly known as the Congress Hall. US President John F. Kennedy spoke here during his visit to West Berlin in June 1963. Due to structural damage, parts of the roof collapsed in 1980 and it took a while before it was rebuilt true to the original in 1987 for Berlin's 750th anniversary celebration.
But that wasn't all. On the occasion of the 750th anniversary a glockenspiel was erected next to the congress hall. The fourth largest glockenspiel in the world, 68 bells and every Sunday at 3 p.m. and also on many holidays there is a concert - played live - in the bell tower.
