Brief history of the Academy of Arts in Hanseatenweg

Since the 1690s, the Prussian Art Academy founded by Elector Friedrich III of Brandenburg has served under various names as an art council and educational society. It was the third oldest such academy in Europe. After the division of Berlin, the self-governing Academy of Arts was established in West Berlin in 1954. The construction of a new academy building was financed by a private foundation of one million US dollars. The Academy of Arts in Hanseatenweg was built in 1960 according to the plans of Werner Düttmann. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the merger took place in 1993. The historical location at Pariser Platz was chosen as the Academy's headquarters. The location at the Hanseatenweg was retained as a place for exhibitions and various cultural events. In 2011, the building was renovated with all its exterior surfaces.
