Brief history of the Old Museum

The Old Museum was the impetus for today's Unesco world heritage, the Museum Island. The royal commission appointed in 1823, which was responsible for the conception of the museum, decided to exhibit only "Fine Art" in the planned building. During National Socialism, the Old Museum served as a backdrop for propaganda, both in the museum itself and on the relocation grounds of the newly designed pleasure garden. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the museum was badly damaged when a tanker exploded in front of the museum and the frescoes designed by Schinkel and Peter Cornelius, which adorned the entrance hall and the back wall of the portico, were largely lost. Since 1998, the Collection of Classical Antiquities in the Old Museum has shown its Greek collection with the treasure chamber on the ground floor of the building.
