Brief history of the park Hasenheide

The name "Hasenheide" goes back to the use of the site as a hare enclosure from 1678. Nowadays, unfortunately, one looks in vain for the hares.
After the end of the Second World War, an artificial elevation, the Rixdorfer Höhe, was created in the western part of the Hasenheide from around 700,000 m³ of rubble. The last shooting range, which was used by the US Army until about 1950, was removed and the entire site laid out according to the plans of Kurt Pöthig, head of the Neuköllner Gartenbüro. The Volkspark Hasenheide was opened on June 7, 1954.
In former times the Hasenheide had had a bad reputation, but this rather inconspicuous park has turned into a beautiful and peaceful recreation area and offers many great leisure activities to discover.
