Art Everywhere in Berlin

Those, who know Berlin, know as well that our city is not the most beautiful but it doesn’t lack creativity and inspiration. Everywhere is art in Berlin.

And for those, that don’t know Berlin, can already guess while passing through that art and culture are dominating the city. The obvious sights of the city are well-signposted everywhere and to find on every map. But the little treasures - like galeries and exhibitions – you have to dig for. Although there’s so much to see!

In Berlin many international and national artists come together and use the perpetual Berlin Chaos as inspiration for their work. Bowie already realized Berlin’s potential in the 70’s, when he went into hiding here to get control of his drug problem. During his stay he drew energy and inspiration from the city, which led him to create music for 3 albums („Heroes“, „Lodger“, „Low“). After his death a street in the district of Schöneberg was named in his honor. As you can see, Berlin takes its artists very serious.

With the years more and more artist collectives are found in Berlin. Also the respective districts take great actions in supporting the development of these collectives. Since recent years Neukölln is the hotspot for artists of all kind. There are countless exhibitions taking place, as well as Pop-Up Events, artistic festivals and concerts. Throughout such public events, (often with low cover charge) the scene wants to attract more attention to increase its publicity and generate greater financial support. Many events vary from week to week, thus also the event locations, which makes it a bit tricky to stay updated about where is what going on in the city (especially if you’re not living here). As we don’t want you to hang in front of your laptop all day, while in Berlin here a little selection of interesting gallery spaces around the city:

Berlinische Galerie

One of the favorites among artists is the Berlinische Galerie. Located in the Alte Jakobsstraße in Kreuzberg, it presents regional and international artwork since 1870. The spectrum is very broad – from photography, architecture and graphics to fine arts. The gallery has 2 levels of exhibition space to host permanent exhibitions as well as varying special exhibitions. The current special exhibition is: DADA Afrika. Dialogue with the unknown(a cooperation with the museum Rietberg in Zürich).

Sammlung Boros

The private collection was opened to the public in 2008. The location alone is worth a visit as it is an old WW2 bunker of 3000m2. It was built in 1942 as a protective bunker for the Nazies, after the war ended it was used as a prison, later during the devided Germany it served as a warehouse for bananas and last it was a S&M club before it was bought by the family Boros.

Founded in 1991, this is one of the most significant contemporary art galleries in Berlin. It is located directly in the city’s gallery district around Kochstraße and offers an uncomparable line-up of emerging and established artists (e.g. installation artist Aernout Mik or video artist Rosa Barba). The Carlier Gebauer Galerie has the capacity to host 3 individual exhibitions at a time. The exhibition halls are called “white boxes”. Additionally, there is a project area where new video work is presented(cinemathic).

Address: Markgrafenstrasse 67, 10969 Berlin
